Owner description: One of Myanmar's great pilgrimage sites is the Golden Rock at Kyaiktiyo, a huge boulder covered by gold leaf and delicately balanced on the edge of a cliff. The pagoda at the Golden Rock is said to hold a hair of the Buddha.

“a good travel guide/driver to Golden rock pagoda,Myanmar”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 23, 2015

My husband and I went to visit this incredible place on 14th May 2015 with a very helpful guide/driver ," Mr. Zaw Hein.": Thanks trip advisor that we could catch his name and e-mail ( [email protected]) from a post on the website. After discussing via e-mai,we could set iteneraries with his helpful informations and he also booked the hotel on the mountain near the pagoda in advance for us.
He is a knowledgable ,good speaking English guide and also a good driver. We used his three days service including travel in Bago ,Syrium and Yangon. We felt so convenient safe and had lots of fun travelling with him.
There're also a lot of interesting attractions in Yangon especially Shawedagong Pagoda, very beautiful at night.

“Amazing views”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 18, 2015

The Golden rocks is about a 4 hour drive from Yangon. The distance isn't that far but being a single lane road where some parts aren't too good with many cars along the way takes time. It is best to take a lunch break in Bago going both directions.

Once there you have to take a 1hour (approximately) ride on an open air truck which seats about 40 odd persons up the mountain. The ride was an experience by it self. During the ride in the back of your mind you really wish/pray that they maintain these trucks well, especially the brakes. Its a ride up and down the side of the mountain so if they brakes go....pretty much you go with it. But being there I must say the conditions of the trucks were pretty good.

Going up is not much of a problem, but coming down is like hell let loose, especially on weekends. If you wait in the queue, you are not gonna get down...period.

As with all temples/holy places here, shoe and socks must be taken off so do take a long a small bag to carry your shoes. A warning to all visitors, with the scorching heat, never visit in the day time or your feet will be well done by the time you finish.

The best time is to go around just before sunset and once the golden rock is illuminated at night, the views are breathtaking. Mind you the last truck leaves around 6pm, so if you want the great views, you will have to stay the night up there.

“Take care of bad guys!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed April 24, 2015 via mobile

One guy can ruin a whole trip within seconds. We started our trip from Kinpun with the overloaded trucks like everyone. We had our seats in the last row, behind us was just the luggage and one guy who organized the people on the truck. This evil guy touched my girlfriend during the drive at a very intimate region! That's just terrible!

“A wonderful experience.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 10, 2015

This temple is world famous & full of history, so its a must if you visit Myanmar. It is also a very beautiful temple full of history, be sure to take a Guide or Guide book as language is a problem in Myanmar. The scenic view from the top is amazing.
The trip in the unusual truck is an experience on its own, as only trucks supplied by the temple can go up to the temple. It is too steep & far to walk.
Be appropriately dressed as a mark of respect to Buddhism.
Well worth a visit.

“Amazing sunrise & sunset on the Golden Rock !”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 7, 2015

The only way to see the Golden Rock at Mt. Kyaiktiyo is a truck ride or by taxi to the top. It cost about 3,000.00 Kyats/person/one way (approx. US$3.00) or a bit more for taxi. You can go there as a day trip( last truck ride leave at 6.30pm) or spend the night there. We stayed the night, even though it is expensive to stay overnight at one of the hotel. However it is worth it as we were able to witness the beautiful & stunning sunset & sunrise on the Golden Rock. We were there on a week-end, so there were lots of local people, monks & tourist on that night. The Golden Rock is a major pilgrimage site for Buddhists & most of the locals sleep overnight on the floor or in a tent. The atmosphere was very spiritual & you have to be there to experience it. Beware the truck ride as it is quite rough & it takes approx. 30 mins but it is good fun. If you have back problem then best to take a taxi.
